Finding Your Audience with Mary Virginia Swanson
In this updated seminar, marketing consultant/educator Mary Virginia Swanson provides participants with a current overview of the diverse market for placement of fine photographs on the wall. She will provide insights into the most efficient and effective tools for introducing your personal work to industry professionals in multiple markets, from fine art to corporate art & decor, as well as discuss the strategy for arranging traveling exhibitions of your photographs.
She will discuss the strategies surrounding submitting work to national and international juried exhibitions and portfolio review events. Art fairs such as AIPAD and Photo LA will be discussed from the standpoint of assessing current market trends and helping artists determine which venues will be most appropriate for their work. Ms. Swanson will include a discussion about use of personal work in contemporary illustration opportunities such as fiction cover art, as well as sales of finished art work to interior design and corporate art markets.
Swanson will also cover the professional practices necessary to effectively present your photographs in the market, as well as sharing examples of effective self-promotion materials in print and on-line formats.
This seminar is geared towards both to photographers who are beginning to promote their work, or those who are considering broadening their marketing to include new audiences for their photographs.

Mary Virginia Swanson is an author, educator and consultant who helps artists find the strengths in their work and identify appreciative audiences for their prints, exhibitions and licensing placements. Her informative seminars and lectures on marketing opportunities have proven to aid photographers in moving their careers to the next level. Swanson maintains a popular blog for photographers called Marketing Photos and coauthored Publish Your Photography Book with Darius Himes (Princeton Architectural Press, Spring 2011). Swanson’s newest title, Finding Your Audience: An Introduction to Marketing your Photographs, is being released early in 2012.
Swanson contributes articles to many print and on-line publications, including PDN and PDNEDU, Digital Journalist, Nueva Luz, and teachingphoto.com, among others in the US and abroad. She serves on the advisory board of Blue Earth Alliance and the “All Roads” Photography Program at National Geographic Society.
